Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited disease that affects the lungs and digestive system in such a way that the body creates an unusually thick, and sticky mucus. This mucus can cause the lungs to become clogged and may lead to life-threatening lung infections. It also stops the natural enzymes form helping the body break down and absorb food.
A tradition of ours to raise awareness of CF is to hold our annual See-Saw-Athon, in which we see-saw for 72 hours straight to help raise money through donations from students and the community. A new fundraiser that we hope will be a success is Kick for CF, in which we hold a kick-ball tournament where all the proceeds go directly to the CFF.
ANAD began in the 1970s by a nurse with a family member who had been diagnosed with anorexia nervosa. To her dismay, she found no support groups for suffers or their family members. She was even told by experts that there were only 2,000 cases of this in the United States and she was wasting her time. She later found out the experts were incorrect and began an organization that people suffering with eating disorders and their families could receive support free of cost.
In order to raise awareness and money for ANAD, Delta Phi Epsilon holds an all-male talent competition, called Mr. Irresistible. Contestants help promote ANAD and positive body image by giving a traditional beauty pageant a twist, having men be the ones that present their talents.
